Urbanized: A Documentary Film
Urbanized: A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit
Architects, urban planners, government leaders, policy makers, builders, residents and others help contribute to the design of cities. Cities are designed? Yes, many cities are and have been historically designed. Good cohesive design might be found in modern cities such as Vancouver or in experimentally planned new urban areas like Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates. What does your city look like?
That is the question explored in Gary Hustwit’s latest film Urbanized which rounds out the Design Film Trilogy. The first two documentaries include Helvetica and Objectified. Helvetica (2007), Hustwit’s first film, focuses on the role the popular sans-serif font has in typography and global visual culture. His second film Objectified (2009) looks at consumer relationships to industrial and product design and the individuals who create the design of objects. Urbanized scales the ideas about design from these first two films in the larger context of urban design and how cities are conceived from a creative point of view.
Earlier this year, Hustwit along with his Director of Photography Luke Geissbuhler, approached funding this film as a Kickstarter project and successfully raised more than their fundraising goal to help with editing and post-production costs to finish their film. Currently, Urbanized is getting limited exhibition at special screenings and will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 8-18, 2011. Look for additional screenings in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Austin, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and Columbus, and check back on the official web site for further announcements and news about the film.
